⚠️ Japan Travel: Traps, Scams & Costly Mistakes
*A guide for the architecture-focused traveler to avoid "cheap-looking" drains on your budget.*
💳 1. The ATM "DCC" Trap (Money)
When withdrawing cash at 7-Eleven or Enet ATMs, it will ask: "Charge in JPY or EUR?"
- The Trap: Choosing EUR (Dynamic Currency Conversion) gives you the ATM provider's terrible exchange rate.
- The Hidden Cost: 5–10% extra in fees. On a ¥50,000 withdrawal, you lose €30–€50.
- The Fix: ALWAYS choose JPY (Local Currency). Let your home bank handle the conversion.
🚕 2. The "Short Taxi" Mistake (Transport)
Thinking a 2km ride late at night is cheaper than a train.
- The Trap: Between 22:00 and 05:00, a 20% late-night surcharge is added. Heavy traffic in Shinjuku/Shibuya keeps the meter ticking even when stopped.
- The Hidden Cost: A 10-minute ride can easily hit ¥4,500 (€25).
- The Fix: Use the JR Yamanote Line until the last train (around midnight). A train ticket is only ¥150 (€0.80).
🚉 3. The "Unintentional" Limited Express (Transport)
Hopping on a nicer/faster-looking train on the same platform.
- The Trap: Some trains (like Limited Express or N'EX) require a Special Express Ticket + seat reservation in addition to your Suica/base fare.
- The Hidden Cost: A ¥500 trip becomes a ¥2,500 (€14) trip because of mandatory on-board premiums.
- The Fix: Check Google Maps carefully for the 🎫 icon. If it says "Limited Express," buy the separate paper ticket at the machine first.
🍱 4. The "Otoshi" Table Charge (Dining)
Entering an Izakaya (pub) because the menu outside looks cheap.
- The Trap: They serve a tiny "appetizer" you didn't order. This is Otoshi, a mandatory table charge.
- The Hidden Cost: ¥500–¥1,000 (€2.70–€5.45) PER PERSON. For 3 people, you pay €16 before ordering your first drink.
- The Fix: Chain restaurants (Uobei Sushi, Denny's) and Ramen shops do not have table charges. Look for "No Table Charge" signs in tourist areas.
🌃 5. The Kabukicho "Street Tout" Scam (Nightlife)
Following a suit-clad person in Shinjuku who offers "cheap" drinks or "free entry."
- The Trap: Once inside, you are hit with "Service Charges," "Ice Charges," and "Weekend Fees." They may intimidate you into paying.
- The Hidden Cost: Bills for ¥50,000–¥200,000 (€270–€1,100) for a single round of drinks.
- The Fix: NEVER follow a street tout. If a bar is on the 2nd floor or higher and only reachable via a tout, it is a trap. Stick to ground-floor shops with clear menus.

🌿 Syantix's "Golden Rule"
If it feels like a "deal" that is too good to be true in a tourist hub (Shibuya/Shinjuku/Asakusa), there is a hidden fee. Stick to your vetted Google Maps pins and Suica for the best value.
